Record numbers attend the sixth annual Bicester Bike Day

A2Dominion’s 2017 annual Bike Day took place on Saturday 8 July at the Pingle Field, Bicester. This attracted over 300 residents, and budding cyclists that enjoyed the day with activities that truly catered for everyone. The free event kicked off with the Tour de Bicester at 10am, an exhilarating treasure hunt for all the family throughout Bicester; residents even followed the clues and claim their own victory medal! This year, an impressive 120 participants took part in the fun.

The main event ran from 11am to 2pm in Pingle Field (behind the Bicester Village shopping centre), with an exclusive showcase from the UK’s top professional extreme sports team. They demonstrated their acrobatic half pipe skills, spins and flips on BMX’s, scooters and skateboards with two shows at 12pm and 1pm. They also offered coaching workshops with hints and tips to aspiring tricksters in the audience.

There was a range of free activities throughout the day including a ‘spin bike challenge’, ‘watt bike challenge’ the ‘slowest bike race’, ‘Brompton folding race’ and a 'smoothie bike' challenge.

Other free activities for the family included face-painting, a bouncy castle, arts and crafts, giant bubbles, a view from a Heavy goods vehicle (HGV), penalty shootout and tandem space hopper races.

Thames Valley Police also offered free bike security coding to all bike owners on the day, while Halfords and Bicester Green were on hand for free bike maintenance.

Local resident Jane Smith said:

“The event was great fun for all the locals in Bicester and it was lovely to see everyone enjoying themselves on the day.”

Paul Smith, another local resident commented:

“It was a great day and a really nice way to spend time with my boys. The event really bought the community together and we all had a nice time in the sun”

The event was organised by North West Bicester developer, A2Dominion, working in partnership with Healthy Bicester, Cherwell District Council, BioRegional, Grassroots Bicester, Bicester Green, Team Extreme and We Are Cycling UK.

Dawn Wightman, Group Director of Housing at A2Dominion said:

“Once again, this year’s event was a fantastic day and a great success in promoting cycling in the Town. Good weather was also a bonus, helping us to attract generous numbers. Both NW Bicester residents and the wider Bicester community came together to enjoy all the activities on offer, so it was lovely to see everyone getting involved and enjoying the day.

“The bike day is a team effort and we are proud to organise such a fantastic partnership event in the town to celebrate Bicester’s community spirit and encourage residents to travel by bike. The day always looks to combine fun and competitions to get the community involved and position cycling in Bicester as safe, accessible and fun for all. Promoting cycling in the Town as a sustainable mode of travel is at the core of our ethos at NW Bicester.”
