Choice Based Lettings

Choice Based Lettings is a way of letting rented properties.

How it works

  • Individual properties are advertised. The adverts will tell you about the size, type, location of the property and rent details and will usually include a photograph of a similar property type
  • All properties that become available within the local authority area (regardless of who the social landlord is) will be advertised by choice based lettings
  • The frequency of advertising will depend on the local authority but it will be either weekly or fortnightly
  • The properties will be advertised in a variety of ways (depending on the local authority), but will generally be by newsletter or on a website
  • Housing register applicants take the initiative to browse the website or newsletter to choose and bid for properties
  • Applicants decide which property they would like to bid for. Making a bid just means asking to be considered for the property-it does not mean that you have to pay
  • You can make a bid by telephone, by post, online or by text (local authorities may offer different bid options)
  • Most local authorities will allow you to withdraw your bid before the end of the bidding cycle if you change your mind
  • Bids are then ranked by the local authority and the bidder with the highest priority for the advertised property will be nominated to the social landlord of that property
  • Most local authorities will publish information about the number of bids for each property and the priority of the successful applicant, so that you can see which the most and least popular areas are. No personal details about applicants are published.

Some of our regions currently operate a choice based lettings scheme. To find out details of the lettings arrangements in your region, please contact the Lettings Team at customer.services@a2dominion.co.uk
