Fire safety

Our student accommodation is built to high standards of fire prevention, and is fitted with fire-resistant doors. These delay fires from spreading from one room to another by thirty minutes.

Our Bristol accommodation also has an advanced fire-detection system, and an automated link with the local fire service.

If the fire alarm goes off in your building, a member of staff will visit the site to check if there is an incident.

If you discover a fire in your flat or in a shared area:
  • tell the other residents who live in your flat
  • sound the fire alarm by pressing the glass
  • leave your flat immediately and do not stop to collect your belongings
  • leave the building by following the green emergency exit signs
  • go to the fire assembly point for your building – if you don’t know where this is, check with your Housing Officer today
  • follow the instructions given by the Fire Marshals (who will be wearing yellow jackets).
If the alarm sounds and the fire is not in your flat, you must:
  • close all doors and windows and stay in your room
  • call the Fire Service on 999 or 112 and tell them you live in shared accommodation with other residents
  • if you do not feel comfortable staying in your room, go to the nearest fire exit by following the green emergency exit signs, and leave the building
  • go to the fire assembly point for your building – if you don’t know where this is, check with your Housing Officer today
  • follow the instructions given by the Fire Marshals (who will be wearing yellow jackets).

Fire-fighting equipment

Each flat has a fire blanket, which is on the kitchen wall. The fire-fighting equipment is provided for your safety. We will take action against anyone who interferes with or misuses the equipment.

Fire doors and escape routes

All flat and room doors are fire doors, and must be kept closed at all times. Do not wedge them open, as you will be putting yourself and others at risk if there is a fire.

Fire doors that are wedged open repeatedly may need repairing, and we will charge these costs to you and the other tenants living in your flat.

Do not leave any items in the shared areas that will block the fire escape route.

Fire alarm testing

We test our fire alarms once a week. To find out the time the alarm is tested, look at the noticeboard in your building.

Fire prevention

Candles

Do not light any candles in your accommodation unless you have written permission from the accommodation office. We will only give you permission to light candles in exceptional circumstances, for example when candles are to be used in religious worship. If you do have our permission to light candles, you must never leave them unattended.

You are not allowed to have any fires or heaters, incense sticks or cones, or charcoal of any kind in the accommodation. You must not take any flammable liquids into the building, including spray paint.

Cooking food

You must never leave food cooking unattended in the kitchen. We will take action against anyone who does this.

Smoking

Bristol only

You are not allowed to smoke in any part of our student accommodation at Bristol, including your room.

All schemes apart from Bristol

You are not allowed to smoke in any of the shared areas of the building, including kitchens, corridors, stairwells, entrances, and laundry and common rooms. The local authority has the power to prosecute anyone found smoking in these areas.

If you would like to smoke, you must do this in your own room or outside the building. There are cigarette disposal bins outside the building.

Under UK law, we have to provide a non-smoking environment for our staff. If we need to come into your room for any reason, please do not smoke while we are there.
