Spelthorne Home Improvement Agency

Spelthorne Home Improvement Agency is a small, not-for-profit home improvement agency (HIA) funded and supported by local and central government. We provide an adaptations service to our older or disabled residents living in the Spelthorne area.

We believe you should be able to live independently in your own home for as long as you want to. If you or a member of your household has a disability or mobility problem, such as trouble walking, we will try to find help for you. This may include providing any adaptation you need. Many adaptations can be funded through a Disabled Facility Grant, which the Home Improvement Agency (HIA) can help you apply for.

We offer advice, support and help to people aged over 60, people with disabilities and those on a low income who are homeowners and tenants of private landlords within the Borough of Spelthorne. The service is intended for people who want to adapt, improve or repair their homes so they can continue to live safely and independently.

We also provide an adaptations service to older or disabled housing association tenants.

We can help you do the improvements and adaptations you want in your home. We will guide you through the whole process of making decisions, organising finance, as well as arranging and overseeing the building work and other technical matters.

Typical jobs include:

  • installing level-access showers
  • installing stairlifts
  • installing ramps
  • installing downstairs toilets
  • undertaking basic plumbing, electrical and carpentry work
  • work to doors and windows
  • work to roofing and gutters
  • fitting loft insulation
  • fitting draft-proof windows.

We recently installed some level-access showers, supplied by local company AKW Showers, at the 'Keep Able Hearing and Mobility Centre' in Staines-upon-Thames. The shop is close to our Staines office, so if you are interested in looking at these showers, you can now visit the shop.

For more information, please call the Spelthorne Home Improvement Agency directly on 0208 825 1759.

The advice we offer is free and you are under no obligation to go ahead with any work. Often the costs of any work can be paid for by a grant from the council. We can also make sure that you are aware of any financial help you are entitled to, including equity release schemes and charitable funding. We will also help clients by making sure they are claiming all the benefits they are entitled to.

Once the costs have been confirmed and you have decided to go ahead, we can help you choose reputable builders who will give you estimates for the cost of the work. If you want us to organise and supervise the job from start to finish, we charge a fee. However, if you are getting a grant this will cover the fee.
