Residential Property Group, A2Dominion, has been awarded £72,874 by West Berkshire Council for its work with families who have been affected by domestic violence and are living in refuges in the district.

Over the next 14 months this funding will cover the cost of a parenting worker and play therapy at two of A2Dominion’s domestic abuse refuges.

Play therapy sessions will be available on a weekly basis at the two locations and will be delivered by a fully qualified play therapist.

Play therapy, a form of psychotherapy, uses play and creative arts techniques to alleviate psychological and emotional conditions in children that are causing behavioural problems preventing them from realising their potential.

The funding comes after a successful bid was submitted to the DCLG by West Berkshire Council with input from A2Dominion and the council’s Community Safety Partnership.

Speaking of the new funding Karen Diver, A2Dominion’s Service Manager, said:

“This funding will have a tremendous impact on the lives of children at our refuges.

“We work with some of the most vulnerable children in society, and when they come to us they are at a very sensitive time in their lives. The play therapy will aid the children and their mothers to overcome the challenging circumstances they find themselves in.

“Being able to offer play therapy at a refuge is extremely rare and I can’t overstate how thrilled we are to have been awarded the funding to provide it over the next 14 months.”

Marcus Franks, West Berkshire’s Executive Member for Community Resilience and Partnerships, said:

“Domestic Abuse is a largely hidden crime that can have a profoundly damaging effect on adults but also in children who are unable to speak out and articulate the distress and fear they are feeling. We are delighted with this support from DCLG.

“It is vital that we are able to provide psychological support for children at a crucial early stage of their lives. Play Therapy is a recognised way of ensuring that they receive the right kind of help at the right time, which can reduce the likelihood of mental health difficulties developing in their later lives.”
