Northolt residents secure £15k cash boost for community improvement

Northolt Residents Association and residential property group, A2Dominion, have secured £14,849.05 from Heathrow Community Fund, to redesign a neglected pathway and landing area alongside the Grand Union Canal.

The six month project, which received funding from the Heathrow Community Fund ‘communities for tomorrow’ grants programme, will engage local volunteers and young people in the design, and landscaping of the area around the steps.

Northolt Residents Association has invested a lot of time and effort into improving public space in the local area. In 2000, the residents group worked with A2Dominion to secure funding to improve the canal walkways between Leander Road and Condor Path, an area that was previously an eyesore, overgrown and littered with rubbish. Since the transformation the residents group have held regular ‘care days’ to ensure the area stays clean.

A2Dominion hopes the local community’s achievements will support a future bid to improve the canal side area, a popular footpath which runs for 250m along the Grand Union Canal, in Northolt.

Debra Aldis from Northolt Residents Association said:

“We are so lucky to live next to the Grand Union Canal. It has had problems with fly tipping in the past, but the community has worked together over the years, to keep the area planted with trees and wild flowers, clearing rubbish and making the area nice.

“A2Dominion and Ealing Council have been extremely supportive. What a relief when the Heathrow Community Fund awarded us funds to replace the broken steps, the main feature of ‘Our Canal Project’. We will use recycled plastic to deck the area. Working with and supporting young people too, it is just a wonderful project. It will be a little piece of heaven in Northolt for all to enjoy. Thanks to everyone.”

Heather David, Head of Community Investment at A2Dominion said:

“We have been managing homes in Northolt for a long time and have a longstanding relationship with the local residents.

“The local residents already do a fantastic job of working together to identify and bring forward improvements and we are happy to offer the support they need to drive those projects forward.”
