Community bus service launches at Elmsbrook
Grayline Coaches will officially launch its brand new, low emissions zone compliant bus service from Elmsbrook at NW Bicester, the country’s largest true zero carbon housing scheme, on Wednesday, 8 June.
Working with Elmsbrook lead developer A2Dominion, the bus 30 minute service will provide residents with access to Bicester town centre and Bicester Village train station.
A2Dominion has subsidised free travel for the first six weeks to incentivise residents of the new Elmsbrook community to try alternative sustainable modes of travel.
All homes at Elmsbrook are located within 400 metres of a bus stop and an in-home information system provided to all households will also give residents real-time bus information from their nearest stop, making public transport more accessible.
Louise Caves, A2Dominion Strategic Partnership Manager said:
“We’re really looking forward to Grayline launching its bespoke Elmsbrook service. Travel accounts for 32 per cent of a typical UK carbon footprint, with private car use alone accounting for 18 per cent of this. So as the lead developers of the UK’s first eco town, we‘re committed to providing the options that give our residents the opportunity to make alternative sustainable transport choices, that in turn are better for the environment.”
Operations Manager at Grayline Coaches, Paul Gray, said:
“We’re proud to be one of the partners that are working with A2Dominion on such a prestigious scheme like Elmsbrook, providing residents with access to a regular, reliable and clean service. We’re passionate about providing a fast, easily accessible and convenient bus service and we are pleased that Grayline will be a source of sustainable transport for Elmsbrook and the wider town. We’re really looking forward to meeting the residents of Elmsbrook as the service gets underway.”
The E1 Service has been commissioned in accordance with the planning requirements for NW Bicester as stipulated by Oxfordshire County Council and Cherwell District Council, alongside Planning Policy Statement 1 (PPS1) for building Eco Towns. This requires A2Dominion to provide a bus service from occupation of the first home to encourage residents to adopt sustainable travel alternatives to the private car.
NW Bicester has a target to reduce the number of local journeys made by petrol or diesel cars by 2026. Currently 67.5 per cent of trips in Bicester are made by car, and one of the project’s aims is to reduce this to 50 per cent by encouraging a shift in residents’ travel choices through initiatives like the dial-a-bus service.
The route is registered with the Traffic Commissioners as a Hail and Ride service, permitting it to stop at any safe point along that route. Although commissioned by A2Dominion for Elmsbrook, the E1 bus service is there to benefit the existing Bicester town and surrounding areas as it will pick up and drop off passengers along the route to and from the town centre, providing an additional regular service for the residents of Bicester.
The bus service is just one of the alternative modes of travel introduced by A2Dominion to minimise C02 emissions, others include cycle paths, a car club, access to electric car hire and more.
