First phase of NW Bicester wins national award

nwb Outline planning permission was recently granted for the next 900 homes at the eco-town

Elmsbrook at NW Bicester, the first phase of the UK’s first eco-town, has been crowned winner of a major national award.

Judges of the prestigious Housebuilder Awards 2015 presented the accolade for Best Low or Zero Carbon Initiative to lead developer A2Dominion. Elmsbrook is the only true zero carbon development of its size to take into account both the energy use of the homes and the energy use of its occupants.

The first homes for sale, launched under the Group’s FABRICA brand in June 2015, have all now been reserved.

Rosie Nesbitt, Group Director of Sales & Marketing said: “Elmsbrook at NW Bicester is a ground-breaking and inspirational project, and we are delighted to have won this award in recognition of its achievements as a true zero carbon scheme.

“All 393 new homes in the first phase are being built to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5.

“Elmsbrook is also one of just 10 world-wide to be awarded Bioregional’s One Planet Living Status, which recognises the importance of enabling healthy, sustainable lives within a fair share of the earth’s resources.”

The Housebuilder Awards, which are organised by Housebuilder magazine and supported by the National House Building Council and Home Builders Federation, recognise and reward excellence in the housebuilding sector.

Judges said that all finalists in the Best Low or Zero Carbon initiative showed excellence, but stated: “The clear winner for the judges was FABRICA by A2Dominion’s Elmsbrook development at NW Bicester, an excellent scheme which was helping customers understand the zero carbon agenda.”

A2Dominion was also crowned Best Medium Housebuilder at the awards.

Elmsbrook at NW Bicester will be the UK’s only housing development to have zero waste to landfill during construction, including any excavation from roads and trenches.

The amount of carbon used during construction has been reduced by 30% per home compared to a traditional build through the embodied carbon of individual materials and local sourcing.

Homes have been designed to stay cool during the summer but warm in winter, and can cope with an average two degree rise in temperature and a peak ten degree temperature change in the future.

Elmsbrook will create more energy than it uses, with electricity generated from solar PV (photo voltaic) panels on every home.

With 100Mb super-fast broadband, all homes have a tablet information system called The Shimmy. This provides real-time energy use, costs and generation information and live bus travel updates while acting as a portal for community information and events and enabling residents to check the electric car club car availability.

Other key initiatives to cut carbon emissions include specially designed cycle and pedestrian routes connecting into the town’s existing network and a bus service from first occupation with bus stops within 400m of every home.

There is also an electric car partnership and charging network to encourage the transition to ultra-low emission vehicles. Each home is wired for an electric vehicle charging point and the development will host the UK’s first semi-rural car club.
