A2Dominion has been unveiled as the winner for Business Transformation of the Year at the prestigious UK Housing Awards 2013, organised by Inside Housing and the Chartered Institute of Housing.

The award was presented for ‘Lean – Achieving Change Together’, the Group’s innovative business transformation programme, which has improved services for customers and achieved efficiencies and savings of around £1m to date.

The award was presented by Great British Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins at a ceremony at the London Lancaster Hotel on 16 April.

Grainia Long, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing, said: “Congratulations to all the winners of this year’s UK Housing Awards. Housing is facing an increasingly challenging environment as the government’s welfare reforms get under way, and their passion, dedication and innovation is nothing less than inspiring for all of us working in the industry.”

Darrell Mercer, A2Dominion Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are delighted to have been announced as the winner for Business Transformation of the Year at the UK Housing Awards 2013. We introduced our Lean programme to help improve our performance at a time when the housing sector was facing one of its most challenging times in recent years. At the same time, we wanted to tackle the cultural differences within A2Dominion following a series of mergers, with 900 staff spread across 67 different offices and schemes, and many different ways of working.

“To address these challenges, we wanted an improvement framework that would improve customer service and business performance whilst delivering savings and value for money. We also wanted an approach that would be driven by staff teams and be easy for them to understand and apply on a day to day basis. A2Dominion’s Lean improvement programme has benefitted our customers and staff whilst helping to safeguard the future of the Group.”

Inside Housing Editor, Stuart Macdonald, said: “The UK Housing Awards are the longest established and most respected awards in the social housing sector, recognising the ingenuity, creativity, passion and results of housing organisations and individuals across the UK. I was overwhelmed by the number of entries we received – almost 300 – and the overall calibre. The standard was really high and I was amazed at the commitment shown by our winners.”

Working with consultants Ad Esse, A2Dominion introduced Lean, an innovative approach to business transformation which was first applied in the manufacturing industry, in particular, derived mostly from the Toyota Production System.

Lean focuses on diagnosing problems, identifying what customers value most, empowering staff to solve problems and making improvements quickly. It also simplifies processes and replaces traditional benchmarking with measurement against perfection.

A2Dominion began its Lean programme with an organisation-wide review in 2010 which helped determine the priorities for improvement. The Group ran pilots in the customer-facing areas of Lettings, Repairs and Complaints.

These delivered impressive results so Lean was then rolled out to other service areas including Leasehold Services, Sales, Housing Management and Care & Support Services. Roll-out of the Lean programme now continues to be extended to the rest of the Group.
