Aids and adaptations

We believe you should be able to live independently in your own home for as long as you want to.

If you or a member of your household has a disability or mobility problem, such as trouble walking, we will try to find help for you. This may include providing any adaptation you need.

Use our online enquiry form to request aids or adaptations for your home.

Our repairs leaflet tells you more about our repairs and adaptations service for customers.

Click on the tabs below to find out more about the aids and adaptations services available to you.

What adaptations do we provide?

We provide a wide range of minor adaptations, for example:

  • making it easier to get in and out of your home by widening doors and installing ramps
  • making it easier to go upstairs by installing a stair lift
  • fitting grab rails
  • providing kitchen and bathroom facilities that are easier to use.

Will I have to pay?

Unfortunately, we cannot pay for all adaptations. You may need to get a disabled facilities grant from your local council. Please contact us for more information.

How will you decide what adaptations I need?

Usually we will ask an occupational therapist to visit you and assess your needs. Occupational therapists work with people who have a physical disability, medical condition, mental health problem or a learning disability. Their aim is to allow you to live as independently as possible.

We will give you advice and help while your needs are being assessed, during any work and afterwards. We want you to receive the best service with as little worry as possible.

What is a Home Improvement Agency?

Home Improvement Agencies are non-profit organisations who help older, disabled, vulnerable homeowners or private tenants to repair, maintain or adapt their homes. Sometimes these agencies are called 'care and repair' agencies. They are funded and supported by local and central government.

There are around 250 Home Improvement Agencies across England. To find your local Home Improvement Agency visit the Foundations website.

A2Dominion runs a localised Home Improvement Agency for people living in the Spelthorne area in Surrey - please see the next tab for more information.

Spelthorne Home Improvement Agency

Spelthorne HIA vertical

Spelthorne Home Improvement Agency is a small, not-for-profit home improvement agency (HIA) funded and supported by local and central government.

It offers advice, support and help to people aged over 60, people with disabilities and those on low income who are homeowners and tenants of private landlords within the Borough of Spelthorne. It also provides an adaptations service to older or disabled housing association tenants.

The service is intended for people who want to adapt, improve or repair their homes so they can continue to live safely and independently.

Typical jobs include:

  • installing level-access showers
  • installing stairlifts
  • installing ramps
  • installing downstairs toilets
  • undertaking basic plumbing, electrical and carpentry work
  • work to doors and windows
  • work to roofing and gutters
  • fitting loft insulation
  • fitting draft-proof windows.

Spelthorne Home Improvement Agency guides you through the process of making decisions and organising finance, as well as arranging and overseeing the building work and other technical matters.

Advice is free and you are under no obligation to go ahead with any work. Often the costs of any work can be paid for by a grant from the council. The agency will also make you aware of any financial help you are entitled to.

Once the costs have been confirmed and you have decided to go ahead:

  • Spelthorne Home Improvement Agency can help you choose reputable builders who will give you estimates for the cost of the work.
  • If you want the agency to organise and supervise the job from start to finish, it will cost a fee.
  • If you are getting a grant this will cover the fee.

To get in touch with the Spelthorne Home Improvement Agency, you can complete an online contact form, call 0208 825 1759 or email hiaadmin@a2dominion.co.uk. Opening hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

If you don’t live in Spelthorne, you can find your local Home Improvement Agency by visiting the Foundations website.
